Solvent-based impregnating varnishes are typically resin-based materials dissolved in non-reactive, organic solvents. With high tank stability, versatility, excellent film forming ability, good technical performance and a proven track record, they remain highly relevant as impregnating materials.
Water-based impregnating varnishes are typically modified resin bases, dissolved in water, often with a co-solvent. Emulsion technology is also used for this type of product. With a low environmental impact, these materials are often a good, economical solution when replacing existing solvent-based varnish technology.
The emulsion chemistry developed by ELANTAS PDG, Inc. is a water-emulsified resin that develops exceptional bond strength and provides an excellent, chemically-resistant film. There are minimal tank adjustments needed, clean up after impregnation is very easy, and it has almost no run-off in the oven. It has low VOCs, a high flash point, and no noxious odors.
Unsaturated polyester resins are dissolved into either monomers or reactive diluents. ELANTAS PDG, Inc. has a number of different monomer and reactive diluents available. The reactive diluents offer non-volatile characteristics. These products provide a significant reduction in emissions compared to varnishes and monomer containing unsaturated polyester resins. Depending on the method of application, whether trickle, roll-dip, dip, UV-dip or vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI), ELANTAS PDG, Inc. offers excellent product stability or tank stability if used in dip and VPI processes.
These are formulated materials using epoxy resin bases, diluents, catalysts and additives. Products based on this chemistry for impregnating materials are typically low or VOC-free, meaning emissions are significantly lower in comparison to varnishes and monomer containing products.
Epoxy resins are characterized by excellent tank stability, excellent chemical and moisture resistance with an overall high technical performance.
The epoxy – vinyl ester copolymer is a unique chemistry that utilizes the benefits of the epoxy resin but has a reactivity and elevated thermal endurance characteristics that are provided through the vinyl ester linkage. The vinyl-ester is a similar mechanism as used in unsaturated polyesters, allowing the product range to capture the overall advantages of the epoxy resin and unsaturated polyester resins.
